Great People Decisions
September 27, 2008

How many of us are really good at hiring great people? OK, I can see many hands up in the air. Chances are that you are wrong - unless you suffer from depression. Twenty odd years back two grad students from Univ of Pennsylvania found out that depressed people are better judges of how much skill they have. Others carry a widely inflated opinion about their skills. 90% of managers rate themselves to be among the top 10% performers. How do I know this? Claudio’s book says so. Why do you think people get hysterical during appraisal discussions unless they have allowed to wear their personal halo and wings.

Eventually it all fell into place. The evolution of the Word document into typeset pages was beautiful feeling. It was like getting a sneak preview of the future. Until the very end, my editor Karthika and I, argued over the rationale of phrases and the “authenticity of voice” of characters. Look, I wanted to show off about the last bit myself having learnt about it recently. The book was typed and printed and bound and ready to be launched. The call from the Harper Collins office really set my pulse racing.

Some things have changed. Some things never will – not in this lifetime. I look at my face in the mirror of the guesthouse of my alma mater and try to discover the changes. I’ve just stepped out of the shower and am buttoning the black Polo shirt that has always been my favourite. The faded pair of Levis and black blazer complete the look. I shave and dab on some cologne. Like the scouts will tell you, ‘Be prepared’. Then I comb my hair and, looking at the strands of silver that have appeared of late around my sideburns, wonder idly if any girl would still find me attractive. After all, at age thirty five the girls on the MIJ campus will probably find me too old, unless I meet one of those who find older men sexy because they have grey sideburns.

Maybe the reason why people look back so nostalgically at their days in college is that for most people those days represent what dreams are made of. Hanging around with friends, being crazy, being ruled by the head than the heart. Why did you give up those shreds of youth just because you became an employee or a spouse. So dream on and keep chasing your dreams. If you stopped singing, dancing, painting, writing, trekking or whatever gave you a high when you were growing up, just go back and discover it. Rediscover your passion.

The book is being launched for the media to give them a sneak peak ahead of the others. It is going to be a small event. So I just thought of inviting all of you to join me on this very very special moment. Besides the media it is important to have some friends to share the special moment. Right?
If you want a more legible version of the invitation then click this link.
The book will be launched at 6.30pm on Sat 20 Sep 08 at the Crossword Bookstore at Select Citywalk Mall in Saket, New Delhi. I want to have one of you to launch this book - why have celebrities launch a book that they have perhaps not even read. So I thought I should have a reader launch it.
You may recall that I had sought readers ideas on plotlines. I have certainly been influenced by some of them. Those ideas have triggered off thoughts that helped write. So if you want a sneak peek - come over and bring your friends along.
I am trying to get two of my friends to enact a small piece of the book. Ummm… more when we meet.
